The impasse in Indian Hockey has finally come to an end with Indian Olympic Association rushing to the rescue of dissident players and offering instant monetary grant.
The deadlock over the issue could have been resolved amicably had Hockey India (HI) officials been little considerate towards the demands of the players and listened to their grievances.
Sahara's decision to provide Rs.10 million grant for the players is a welcome step and will definitely boost morale of the dwindling Indian side. In recent years Indian hockey players have often accused government authorities for meeting out step-motherly treatment and lack of financial support to the game.
It's such a shame for the country that when Indian players should have been focusing on their world cup preparations they shunned the practice sessions to demand better future and payment structure.
Indian hockey which boasts of eight Olympic titles under its belt disastrously failed to qualify for the Beijing Games in 2008 and secured a direct World Cup seat only by virtue of being the hosts.
As Indian hockey passes through the tumults times, it is hoped that it cleanses itself from the corruption and imperious officials like K. P. S. Gill and Jothi Kumaran under whose authority the game turned from bad to worse.
The need of the hour is that Indian hockey once again attains the glowing health if not wealth.
